Our Participants Share Their Stories for NHCW

As we reflect on what it means to be a community health center during National Health Center Week (NHCW), we think about our 37 years of service to participants. We are grateful we have been able to welcome thousands of community members from all walks of life with distinct medical, dental, behavioral health and social services needs. Which is why, as part of NHCW’s Patient Appreciation Day, we are featuring a few stories of our participants who keep us committed to our mission.

Rosa Cruz, Medical Services Participant

Rosa has been with Mary’s Center for over 15 years. She has two children, one of whom was born and successfully delivered from a high-risk pregnancy. Rosa thanks Mary’s Center for a smooth pregnancy, as the staff guided her every step of the way. During her most difficult moments they provided medical advice, counseling and all the resources she needed through the entire pregnancy and beyond.

“My doctor and nurse supported me throughout the process,” Rosa said. “They showed empathy and, above all, treated me like a member of their family.”

Rosa will never forget her nurse, Cassie.

“She was by my side before, during, and after giving birth. No matter where she is, I will always be grateful for all her support.”

Rosa and her 3-year-old son are now receiving classes from Briya, our partner in education, where she is learning English and her son is getting ready to start school. Rosa says she doesn’t know what she would have done without Mary’s Center.

“Thank you, Mary’s Center, for providing health services and all the resources for a healthy and happy life.”

Gale Williams, Dental Services Participant

Gale came to us seeking dental services after her private dentist stopped taking her insurance. Our dental program for seniors was a perfect fit for her. At Mary’s Center, Gale has received regular check-ups, cleanings and fillings.

“I was surprised at the quality of care that they gave,” Gale said. “Mary’s Center overall gives you the best healthcare service that’s so necessary. They offer so many services.”

In 2023, Gale needed a partial lower denture, which required five visits for X-Rays and molds. Before Mary’s Center, Gale’s expensive dental costs were affecting her self-esteem and putting her under financial strain. Through the support she received from our oral health program for older adults, she was able to get the treatment at no cost.

In addition to dental services, Gale also benefits from our medical, behavioral health and social services programs.

“I love Mary’s Center. It’s just the best place that you can come, and it shows you what healthcare looks like.”

John Lyon, Behavioral Health Services Participant

John Lyon walked into our clinic looking for a long-term solution to his heroin addiction. He had been battling with his illness for over 50 years. After overdosing three times in a four-month timeframe, he knew he had to seek help.

“When I actually needed Mary’s Center, Mary’s Center was here for me,” John said. “They responded to the problem with a workable solution.”

Through receiving primary care and medication-assisted treatment with Dr. Daniel Smith, Mary’s Center’s Director of Addiction Services, John has now been off drugs for more than three years.

“They basically saved my life because they listened, and they acted.”
