Board Member Pepper Reed’s Story

Board Member Pepper Reed’s Story

I genuinely don’t know where – or who – I would be if it weren’t for Mary’s Center.

In 2019, I was a single mother of three beautiful children, battling years of substance use, alcoholism, unemployment and depression. I was at my breaking point and struggling to survive day to day. And then an appointment at Mary’s Center changed my life.

I shared with my doctor that I wanted to break free from addiction and finally take my health seriously. Instead of judgment, I was met with compassion. Without hesitation, she walked me over to the office of Maria, a specialist in substance use. Although I didn’t have an appointment, Maria welcomed me, listened to me, and saw me. She connected me with a therapist that very same day.

That moment marked the beginning of my healing journey.

Fast forward to today: I am six years sober. I am the proud mother of five amazing children, two of whom entered the world surrounded by the care and support of Mary’s Center. I earned my associate degree from the University of the District of Columbia and am now a student at Howard University with a 4.0 GPA. I am a licensed realtor in Maryland and D.C., and I work for the United States court system. I am also proud to say that I now sit on the Mary’s Center Board of Directors.

All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without Mary’s Center. Their staff held my hand through every step of my healing. They never treated me differently because I had Medicaid. They showed me the same love, compassion, and respect that they show everyone, and that is what sets them apart.

Because of Mary’s Center, I found more than survival—I found the strength to rise, and I’m still rising.

Please join me in making a gift to Mary’s Center to ensure stories like mine can continue to be told.

When you do, you will help us fulfill our mission and improve the health and well-being of 65,000 people across the DC region.

Thank you and happy holidays,
