What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that reduces the risk of getting HIV by about 99% when taken as prescribed. It can be used by anyone at risk, regardless of their sexual identity or orientation, including pregnant or breastfeeding women.

PrEP protects only against HIV- it does not prevent other STIs or pregnancy, so condoms and other prevention methods may still be needed.

New Option: Injectable PrEP
In addition to daily pills, PrEP is now available as an injection. Studies show it is even more effective than daily pills for many people, especially if taking a pill every day is challenging.

Are you a good candidate for PrEP?

If you’ve answered “yes” to any of the questions below, you might be a good candidate for taking PrEP to prevent contracting HIV.

  • Have you ever had sex without a condom?
  • Have you or your partner(s) had an STI in the past year?
  • Do you participate in injectable drugs or share needles?
  • Are you in a relationship with an HIV+ partner?
