Our Special Events

Our Special Events

We provided $3.8 million of free care to uninsured neighbors in need in 2015. We held fundraising events throughout the year to try to cover those expenses and balance our budget. We also held Holiday drives to bring cheer to local families in need.

Noche Tropical Annual Gala

Mary’s Center’s Annual Noche Tropical Gala took place on Friday, October 16, 2015. More than 440 guests reveled, taking in the gala’s cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, three-course seated dinner, Hora Loca, and, new to the event in 2015, a Rum and Cigars party.

Gala Co-Chairs Nina Albert and Matt Klinger and guests celebrated Mary’s Center’s Employees of The Year: Kristina Andersson, MD, Walter Castillo, and Miriam Garcia. The evening was a great success, raising $443,000 to support the transformative services provided every day at Mary’s Center. Noche Tropical 2016 took place on Friday, October 28 with the theme Un Carnaval. Find out more about the event at

Taste of Adams Morgan is an annual neighborhood event during which the Adams Morgan restaurant and business community open their doors to support the mission of Mary’s Center.

On Tuesday, May 3, 2016, hundreds of diners, 22 restaurants, and local businesses helped raise $15,000 – our most successful Taste event yet! Mary’s Center is grateful for organizing partner, the Adams Morgan BID, participating restaurants, our sponsors and the guests who purchased tickets to the event.

Holiday Drives

The holiday season can be a lonely and stressful time for families who do not have the means to purchase gifts or host loved ones for a special meal. This is why Mary’s Center, with the help of our donors and volunteers, makes every effort to spread happiness and holiday cheer to those we serve.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

More than 300 families in need receive ingredients to cook a complete Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, rice, canned vegetables and other side dishes. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, volunteers sort, inventory and bag the food items during the Andrew and Ryan Klinger Thanksgiving Volunteer Event, named in honor of the two generous and inspiring young men shown here with their parents, Michelle and Matt Klinger. Families either come to Mary’s Center to pick up their Thanksgiving groceries or receive them via delivery from our Home Visiting team.

Holiday Toy Drive

Every year, Mary’s Center makes dreams come true by distributing brand-new toys to nearly 1,000 boys and girls during the holiday season. Accompanied by their parents or a guardian, the children pick out their toy of choice at our annual Holiday Participant Party. For this festive occasion, Mary’s Center relies on the community to donate new toys and help us transform our site into a Winter Wonderland.

Mary’s Center is indebted to the many groups and individuals who lent their time and support to make the 2015 Holiday Season cheerful and bright for the families we serve. Whether hosting a food drive at their school, company or place of worship, volunteering countless hours to stuff Thanksgiving bags, or greeting our participants with love and joy, our volunteer corps put their heart and soul into the event.

Educational Baby Showers

Every quarter, about 50 expecting mothers in their last trimester and new moms gather at Mary's Center for an afternoon of educational activities. Our medical providers and Social Services staff reassure and prepare the women (and their partners or other family members) through talks on about topics like labor and delivery, baby's first days at home, and nutrition. Thanks to the generosity of the quilters from Quilting for Good, each mom takes home a bright and beautiful quilt for her baby, as well as a bag of baby products. If you would like to support our Baby Showers, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Stephen Wheadon at or on telephone 202-420-7014.
