A Crucial Catch - Mary's Center Receives Grant to Increase Breast Cancer Awareness

Mary's Center will host “A Crucial Catch Day,” a community health event to raise awareness about breast cancer on Tuesday, October 25, in Washington, DC, thanks to a generous $50,000 grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Football League (NFL).

The event will be held at Mary’s Center’s Petworth location, at 3912 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20011, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Activities will include a nutrition demo and tasting; physical and emotional wellbeing workshops to learn how lifestyle can reduce the risk of disease; an “I Fight Breast Cancer” photo booth for social media; and information on how to access health insurance & screening exams.

The grant from the ACS and NFL will also support Mary’s Center efforts to provide education, outreach and navigation in the District. Washington, DC is one of 32 cities to have a grant recipient now focused on reducing the unequal burden of cancer by educating women on the importance of regular mammograms.

“Early detection is vital, and this generous grant from the NFL and the American Cancer Society will help Mary’s Center educate more low-income women about the need for screening and where they can get screened. They will be empowered to take charge of their own health and to help other women in their families and communities,”says Maria Gomez, President/CEO of Mary’s Center.
