FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMS
Even Start/ESF Public Charter School
Education
and family literacy improves families’ education and English
literacy levels. The Family Literacy Program provides parents and their
children ages 0-7 with the tools needed to be successful in school and in the
work place. These classes include English as a second language, literacy and
computer skills instruction. Parent and Child Together Time (PACT Time)
supports parents’ understanding of their role in their children’s
educational development; reinforcing the impact that parents have on educational
success. Additionally, parents are instructed on parenting, civic and job
skills.
In September 2006 Mary’s Center partnered with Education Strengthens
Families(ESF)/ Public Charter School and expanded its services
with the opening of a charter school by adding an additional literacy level
to meet student needs. This was coupled with an additional day of classes
catered to strengthen the family literacy services available to the immigrant
population of the District of Columbia by enhancing its quality and long-term
financial stability.
