MC Dental operates like a Navy Dental Office

As we mark Veteran’s Day, we thank all those who have served our country, among them staff members like our Chief Dental Officer, Dr. Richard Gesker, who served in the Middle East. Read Dr. Gesker’s blog on dental services at Mary’s Center.

Our innovative Mary's Center dental model is a hybrid of three different dental care operational theories, using the best practices of each: 

(1) a military, data-driven, high-volume and protocol-driven office,

(2) a technology-intensive private practice staff-driven model of accountability, and

(3) a public health, social responsibly model allowing access and discounted dental care for everyone.

Our team of general dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants are able treat patients comprehensively in our Family Dental Office environment, which includes care for children, adults and the elderly.

These services include cleanings, sealants, periodontal care, fillings, build-ups and crowns, root canals, extractions, partial and full dentures, etc.  Specialty care, which is in great demand, is available through community partnerships.

The office is typically operational six days a week: 

  • Monday-Thursday 8am-10pm and 
  • Friday-Saturday 8am-6:30pm.  

While there is only one physical office, it operates like three separate offices; our practice management structure uses three treatment teams that allow us to operate 75 hours of production per week, with two dentists and two hygienists staffed at all times. At capacity, the office is able to treat 10 patient encounters per hour, which is equivalent to 24,000 encounters per year.

Our dental team is staffed with new and recent graduates from dental, hygiene, and dental assisting schools.  We also grow staff from within by encouraging upward mobility: Front desk team members obtain their dental assisting licenses, dental assistants attend hygiene school, and undergraduate interns pursue dental school. In the last five years, we have had only minimal staff turnover, and we currently employ 33 team members.

We have also recently partnered with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and Howard University's School of Dentistry, allowing their fourth-year dental students complete their community education with us in 3-week increments.  All of the above allow for highly effective recruitment, growth, and retention of the best mission-orientated staff, while also fulfilling our commitment to our staff and community.  In the coming years, we will be opening a second and third dental sites that will focus primarily on children's care and care for those with special needs.

  • After graduating from Temple University, School of Dentistry and Temple University, School of Business, Dr. Gesker began his career as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Dental Corps, with his first deployment being to the Middle East in 2004.  He took care of the dental needs of service personnel and participated in humanitarian missions for people in dental need. In the Navy, Lieutenant Gesker learned the importance and challenges of public health. After the Navy, Dr. Gesker joined a private dental practice management group, where he gained additional skill sets which allowed him to incorporate his military and private practice experience into our innovative Mary's Center dental care model. We welcomed Dr. Gesker aboard the Mary's Center Team in 2010 and are proud to have him and his dental team as an integral part of our holistic approach to care!
