The Mary's Center Round-Up: What's New?

There have been some exciting things going on at Mary’s Center in the last few weeks, and we wanted to share them with you!

High-Level Cuban Delegation Visits Mary’s Center

Mary’s Center was honored to host Cuban officials, including the Vice Minister in the Ministry of Public Health and the Director of the Tropical Medicine Institute at our Petworth, DC location on March 29th (see photo above). This was the first high-level delegation from Cuba’s health ministry to visit the US. Our President and CEO, Maria Gomez, led a tour of the site and informed the visitors about the clinical care Mary’s Center offers, our operation as a federally qualified health center (FQHC), and our unique integration of health, education and social services. See photos of the visit on Facebook.

Increasing Substance Abuse Services Thanks to HRSA

Our Mental Health department will be expanding its services for people with substance use disorders thanks to a 2-year grant of $374,000 from HRSA, the Health Resources and Services Administration (part of the US Department of Health and Human Services). Through this grant, we’ll be able to screen more participants for substance abuse and connect them to appropriate care as well as increase our ability to use Medication-Assisted Treatment. We’ll also be able to hire a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Certified Addictions Counselor to better serve patients.

Alejandra Leads Anti-Bullying Day

When she arrived from El Salvador in 2014, Alejandra didn’t speak English. After being bullied at school for not speaking the language, she was determined to do something to help others going through the same situation. With the support of her teachers, Alejandra has become a leader in fighting bullying and even organized an Anti-Bullying Day fair at her school recently. The turn-out was great and Mary’s Center representatives provided information about our work and services. Congratulations to Alejandra for leading an amazing event!
