Meet Dr. Christian Cornejo, Pioneer Provider at Our New Center in Fort Totten

We are just weeks away from the opening of the new Mary's Center location in Fort Totten, Northeast DC, in November and we couldn’t be more excited! This will be our seventh location and we’ll be bringing high quality medical, dental and mental health care through providers including pediatrician Dr. Christian Cornejo. We spoke with him about what the new center will offer and the impact it will have on the community.

Tell Us About Yourself and the Team Working At Fort Totten

I joined the Mary’s Center team because I love working with the diverse population and helping my patients take charge of their health. I feel privileged to be among the pioneering providers at the new location. All the members of the Fort Totten team are highly qualified and highly committed to their patients.

We’ll be providing quality pediatric care, adult care including women’s health services (prenatal and OB/GYN), senior care, mental health therapy, and dentistry for both adults and children.

Why is Mary’s Center Opening a New Site in Fort Totten?

At Mary’s Center we’ve always gone where the need is.  Fort Totten is Ward 5 of Washington DC and the need for high quality primary care is great in that area. For example, the 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment released by the DC Healthy Communities Collaborative in July revealed that 8.6% of  adults in Ward 5 have no healthcare coverage and 10% delayed getting medical care because they couldn’t get an appointment soon enough. Obesity rates among both adults and children in Ward 5 are high, as is the prevalence of diabetes and tobacco use.

Mary’s Center has been very successful in working with patients on these issues, using our Social Change Model, and I believe we are going to make a significant impact in improving health outcomes in Fort Totten and the surrounding neighborhoods. We will be serving 15,000 patients per year when our site is fully operational

What is the Social Change Model?

Our Social Change Model has three elements: healthcare, education and social support. It’s Mary’s Center’s unique, holistic approach to health, recognizing that wellness depends on many factors. We provide a full range of wraparound services to help our participants deal with the all the stressors in their lives and achieve wellbeing.

For example, we can link a patient who has hypertension to our nutritionists and whatever other services that patient may need, ranging from dental and mental health care to English classes and job training through our education partner, Briya Public Charter School, which is in the same building.

Why Are You Excited About the New Fort Totten site?

Besides working in a beautiful new facility and serving the community members in Fort Totten, one of the most exciting things to me is our collaboration with Briya and a new partner, Bridges Public Charter School. (link)

Bridges is an inclusive elementary school where children with special needs make up about a third of the population, which is the highest percentage of any school in DC. Working with Bridges gives Mary’s Center a wonderful opportunity to extend our services to those children and their families. We’re looking forward to becoming a medical home for many of them.

How Do Patients Make Appointments at Fort Totten?

We’re opening in early November, and we’re already scheduling appointments. Patients can call 1-844-796-2797 for medical and dental appointments. That line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They can also request appointments online.

For mental health appointments, they can call 202-420-7122.

I would also like to invite community members to come to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House on Saturday October 15th from 11am to 2pm. Come in and meet the team, tour the Center and our partner schools and enjoy some fun family activities. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Learn more about Fort Totten and other upcoming projects, and how you can make a difference!
