8 Years of Impact in Montgomery County

This an exciting time for the Mary's Center team in Silver Spring, Maryland. We're celebrating 8 years of improving health outcomes in Montgomery County and looking forward to some big changes coming soon. In this blog, Zulma Aparicio, Director of Operations for the Silver Spring site, reflects on the past and looks to the future.

I opened my inbox the other day and found two emails that emphasized why I love my job. The first was from a local church: “Thank you for the excellent services you have provided to one of our members here at our church … your dedication to patients is much appreciated”.

The second message was from Pablo* who said: “I feel I need to let you know about the outstanding work one of your staff members has done; they really go above and beyond in their responsibilities. They demonstrated to me an excellent customer service attitude and patiently guided me through the process of ordering an ultrasound. The best part about this is that I was out of state for a meeting, yet the referral specialist took the time on the phone to really make sure I knew what to do.”

I am so proud to be in charge of the Mary’s Center site in Silver Spring, which has made a difference in people’s lives for the past 8 years. I am privileged to work with an amazing team that adds the “care” to healthcare and the “service” to social services.

After 20 years of operating in DC, Mary’s Center opened the Silver Spring site – our first in Maryland – in 2008. We had identified an urgent need in Montgomery County, where low-income residents lacked access to affordable medical care.

The site, which is conveniently located in an on-street shopping center on Flower Avenue, quickly became popular. Mary’s Center made a name for itself in that community, with our comprehensive services, including chronic disease control, health promotion & education, nutrition, mental health therapy and social services.

In 2015 we served 3,718 Montgomery County residents, including 2,290 people (62%) who were uninsured. We provide care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We don’t turn anyone away.

The need for our services continues to grow and our current location is at capacity. Fortunately, we will be able to extend our hours of operation on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 am to 6:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 12:30 pm, starting July 9th 2016. With this expansion, we hope to serve more than 400 new participants per year. We’re so grateful to the angels at the Healthcare Initiative Foundation, whose financial support will make this possible.

As a long-term solution to space limitations at the Flower Avenue site, we hope to relocate to a larger facility. My team and I are excited about this move, planned for 2017, especially because we’ll be able to introduce much-need dental care to the array of services we offer in Maryland.

In the meantime, if you or your family and friends live in Montgomery County, we’d love to welcome you to the current location in Silver Spring.  Give us a call on 1-844-796-2797 to make your appointment with our caring and highly-qualified providers!
