Paying It Forward: Claribel’s Story

Claribel Salgado’s connection to Mary’s Center goes way back, back to 1991 when the Center was in a humble basement in Adams Morgan. Her mother came for prenatal care when she was pregnant with Claribel.

Later, Claribel came for services and support herself, when she was a young mom-to-be, anxiously awaiting the arrival of her first child. Now she is a devoted mother of three and a proud member of the Mary’s Center Team.

She started as a Medical Assistant (MA) in 2013, working at our Georgia Avenue location in Petworth.  One of her biggest achievements during that time was helping to build the curriculum for the Medical Assistant course introduced by Briya Public Charter School, Mary’s Center’s education partner.

“It felt good to give back to Mary’s Center, to pay it forward to the MA trainees.”

Claribel has grown professionally at Mary’s Center. She was recently promoted to the position of Home Visiting Family Support Worker in the Healthy Start program.

“It is a wonderful learning experience, since I get to work all over DC and help people from all the different wards of the city. I help participants apply for Medicaid and for other benefits they didn’t know they were eligible for because they can’t read or write. I also help moms-to-be apply for daycare vouchers, because the waiting lists are very long and it’s good to apply even before their baby is born.”

Claribel is happy to be making a real impact in the lives of local families in need.

“When families call me and tell me they are short of food, I take them a bag of items from the donations we get. It’s very satisfying to be able to make life a little better for them.”
