Expanded Behavioral Health Services (New Behavioral Health Center)

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 21% of low-income children and youth age 6 to 17 years experience behavioral health problems. Fifty-seven percent of children and youth exhibiting behavioral health problems come from households living at or below the federal poverty level.

Mary’s Center is working very hard to alleviate this situation and provide affordable behavioral health care to children in our area, through services like the very successful Parent Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT). Our PCIT program is one of just three sites in DC that currently provides PCIT to children with special needs, addressing another significant health disparity in our region.

Our behavioral health team also treats hundreds of adults each year, for a total of 8,220 encounters per year. All this in a cramped office space shared with our human resources, communications and other administrative staff. Space constraints limit our ability to meet the high demand for our services and we sometimes have to put patients with acute needs on a waitlist.

With your help, we have created a dedicated 3,205 SF space for behavioral health care in Adams Morgan. Our new Behavioral Health Center on Kalorama Road includes the following:

·         13 behavioral health offices

·         6 touchdown spaces for providers in our Health Homes and School-Based Mental Health programs

·         1 PCIT space

·         1 large conference room

·         1 reception area with seating for 8 participants

·         2 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant bathrooms

The center will offer increased space for our behavioral health program and increased service delivery. We will be able to accommodate three more therapists and meet the critical demand for our services by having 3,139 additional encounters per year.

The additional therapists and larger Parent Child Interactive Therapy space (PCIT) will enable us to help more children experiencing socio-emotional difficulties and their parents, putting them on the path to health and success.

Through your support, we will also have space to offer group therapy to provide timely care for people on the waitlist and create a peer support program where participants in recovery can support others. The large conference room in the Behavioral Health Center will make it easier to have care coordination meetings with other service providers for high-risk clients.

Mary’s Center will also contribute to the training and professional development opportunities of new mental health professionals, since we will have work space for additional interns in the Behavioral Health Center.
